Hospital News

Winter 09

Kaycee met with the Royal Sussex Hospital Voluntary Services Manager, Active LightWorks is the Hospital’s preferred partner of choice and as such only accepts Therapists that have gone through the screening process with Active LightWorks.
She also met with the Head of the Cancer ward and two ward managers and is due to meet with another three.

We currently have a team of highly motivated therapists working at the cancer ward on a Volunteer Basis and making a positive impact on the patients (3 in the Cancer ward, 3 on leave or not available for now, and 4 new therapists currently going through the hospital process to become Hospital Therapists).
We hope to have a therapist in the Mid-Wifery Ward very soon!
We have a specialized team of 4 therapists waiting to start work on a funded research project at the Royal Alexander Children’s hospital in the High Dependency Unit /Cystic Fibrosis patients. This is a result of last April’s pilot study.
Kaycee is revamping the Feedback Questionnaire for patients. The ward managers provide feedback from patients on treatments received on a monthly basis as each ward is unique and specific factors need to be considered with patients with different illnesses.
Let’s have more feedback from you as to how your treatments are benefiting your clients – send us your success stories to share with everyone!

Whitehawk Inn and Area
We have set up a clinic for SPIN (Single Parents Information Network) on Friday mornings. We have a new all round therapist, Flo Anderson, who will give a choice of hourly treatments. Well done, Flo!
We still have Georgia there on a Thursday offering reflexology to the service users. We are thinking of increasing the treatment times to 45 minutes allowing clients to receive a fuller treatment.

Joanna Gurr, the director of SPIN met deputy leader of Brighton & Hove Council, Ayas Fallon-Khah, who happens to be a therapist, and told him about ALW; it seems he is very interested in us.
Nikki Bradford is still project leading at Whitehawk Primary School and a new venture with the Family Support Initiative at Tilstone Place. Thanks to Nikki and her teams! We have other new projects in the pipeline, so look out for our mailers seeking volunteers – Amaze and New Horizons.

Carden Primary School
60 teaching staff had a treat on September 2nd when we gave 6 presentations and treatments. The speakers were our own therapists, the feedback was excellent, everyone was a star!

Malcolm and Penny must be mentioned for giving outstanding presentations!

Head teacher Catherine asked us to provide regular treatments to staff which we are unable to do at present, but we have agreed to consider holding a pamper evening for parents and school governors.
´On Monday September 14th we gave a taster session at The Clock Tower Sanctuary, a support centre for homeless young people aged 16 to 25. We gave 12 treatments to service users and volunteers and all thought our service excellent. We have been invited to hold monthly sessions until Christmas, so join us if you can and help these lovely young people, many without access to a GP.

´The Targeted Mental Health Project has invited us to take part in a Schools Conference at Brighton Racecourse on November 12th 2009. As many therapists as possible, please, for about an hour!
´Penny works for the Daily Mirror, and has invited us to present a question to a team of experts on the BUSINESS PAGES, any aspect of ALW, which will be published in the Mirror, e.g. “How do we get our “Business Angels” to fund us!”, also with photos of us at work.

Community of Therapists

Venetia (our Community Link) has done a grand job on the MEETUP website (Active LightWorks Charity Meetup Group). Please sign up.

Well on Target

OUT OF “AMAZING FUTURES” IN MAY:
After a busy August working on projects arising from AMAZING FUTURES, and a sound business strategy the Trustees have clarified our structure and mission. We are currently advertising for someone to take on the role of COMMUNITY PROJECT MANAGER and will be seeking more TRUSTEES.
In 2010 we will launch our new MEMBERSHIP PROGRAMME, outlining the many benefits of becoming a member of Active LightWorks, and enabling you to vote on issues and make your voice heard. We need to expand EDUCATION and FUNDRAISING so we can work towards a permanent clinic base.
One of the main ideas to emerge from Amazing Futures was to improve communications between therapists and officers and our new staff have helped us in this task, but we still have more work to do.In the meantime:

THANK YOU ALL PARTICIPATING THERAPISTS AND MANAGERS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Best wishes from the Trustees
