INTEGRATED
HEALTHCARE
Integrated health care is an approach to health which looks
at the person as a whole. Taking into account the effects
of lifestyle, environment and emotional well-being on the
state of a person's health, while incorporating elements
of complementary and alternative medicine alongside orthodox
methods of diagnosis and treatment.
The focus is on health and healing rather than disease and
treatment. The aim of Integrated Healthcare is to offer
patients the safest and most effective aspects of mainstream
medical science and complementary health care, the emphasis
on prevention and self-care to help people avoid illness
and stay well.
One of the leading experts in this approach is Dr
Andrew Weil, a Harvard-trained doctor who has set up
the programme in integrative medicine at the university
of Arizona where he practises natural and preventative medicine
and provides a unique approach to healthcare encompassing
body, mind and spirit.
Swedish
massage is a commonly taught and known massage
technique which is designed to energize the body and stimulate
circulation. Kneading, rolling, effleurage, vibration and
percussions are the five basic strokes used to manipulate
soft tissues. The therapist uses oil to reduce friction
on the skin. Some of the benefits may include an over all
relaxation, improve circulation which may speed up the persons
own healing process and reduce swelling from injury. Reflexology
works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self
healing and maintain balance in physical function. This
technique is mainly used to reduce pain, increase relaxation
and stimulate circulation of the blood and lymphatic fluids.
Some of the benefits may include addressing stress related
illness, emotional disorders as well as fertility.
Reflexology
is a convenient and non invasive therapy and has been used
in cases where an area of the body could not be manipulated
directly.
Advance Reflexology allows the therapist to learn more techniques
that can be used on the foot and do more research on how
to give the most appropriate treatment and on specific conditions
such as diabetes, M.E, rheumatism, arthritis, multiple sclerosis,
pregnancy, asthma and cancer. It also teaches hand and ear
reflexology as well as Taiwanese reflexology techniques.
Onsite
Massage is a form of sited massage practiced
on a specially designed seated massage chair (see
picture right) which allow the practitioner to gain
access to massage the whole of the back, neck, shoulders,
arms, hands and scalp. The massage uses different
techniques like acupressure, traditional massage as
well as the breath to help with the release of tension.
Reiki
is an energy therapy, where the practitioner places
their hands on or above the client usually starting
on the head and working down to the feet. Some of
the advantage of this therapy is that it is done through
the client‘s clothes and that he or she can
be seated, lying or even standing if necessary. The
therapy can be beneficial for mental and physical
conditions. Some of the benefits may include deep
relaxation; have a de-stressing effect and stimulate
the body's natural healing process. |
